Laser hair removal in autumn and winter: why this is the best time
Would you like to go through next summer without shaving? Then laser hair removal in winter is the smartest start. In the colder months your skin is lighter, you spend less time in the sun and you have plenty of time for a full course of treatments.

In short
- Tanned skin absorbs more laser light. In autumn and winter your skin is lighter, which makes the treatment safer and more effective.
- A course usually takes six months to a year. If you start in December, you will have the first six sessions behind you by summer.
- Between sessions you may shave, but not wax or epilate.
- Start with a free trial treatment, so you can first experience how the laser feels.
Why sun and laser do not mix
Laser hair removal works through the pigment in your hair, melanin. That pigment absorbs the laser light and turns it into heat, which disables the hair follicle. The more contrast there is between dark hair and light skin, the more precisely the laser can do its job.
After time in the sun, your skin produces more melanin itself. As a result, the skin absorbs part of the laser light, which increases the risk of redness and irritation. That is why we ask you to avoid the sun and sunbeds in the weeks before and after each treatment. You can see exactly how this works in the skin on the page how laser hair removal works.
Good to know: the Soprano Titanium by Alma Lasers treats skin types I to VI and cools the skin continuously. Even so, untanned skin remains the best starting point, also for darker skin tones.
Ready in time for summer
The laser only works on hair that is in the growth phase at that moment. Because not all of your hair grows at the same time, several sessions are needed. A course usually consists of six to ten treatments, with four to six weeks in between. You can read more about this on the hair growth cycle page.
An example of a course that starts in December:
- DecSession 1
- JanSession 2
- Feb/MarSession 3
- AprSession 4
- MaySession 5
- JuneSession 6
Indication only. The exact number of sessions depends on the area, your hair and your hormones.
The benefits of laser hair removal in winter
Why do so many clients choose laser hair removal in winter? These are the main reasons:
- Lighter skin. Without a tan, the laser targets the hair more precisely.
- Peace of mind after treatment. The skin can be a little red after a session. Under a jumper or long trousers, nobody notices.
- No sunny holiday in the way. In summer you constantly have to think about sun and beach. In winter that is much easier.
- No stress in June. While others are still shaving, you already have most of your course behind you.

Frequently asked questions
Can I also start laser hair removal in summer?
You can, as long as the area is not tanned and you avoid the sun in the weeks before and after each treatment. In summer that is harder to keep up. That is why most clients choose laser hair removal in autumn or in winter.
How long does a full laser course take?
A course usually consists of six to ten sessions, with four to six weeks between each one. So expect six months to a year, depending on the area and your hair.
Do I need sunscreen in winter as well?
Yes, on treated areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the face. Use factor 50, especially during a winter sports holiday, because snow strongly reflects sunlight.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, shaving is fine. Waxing and epilating are not allowed during a course, because they remove the hair root that the laser works on.
